A sewer pipe system is an underground piping system to transport wastewater and sewage from not only homes but also industries. There are 3 types of modernized sewer systems:

2.) Storm Sewers

3.) Combined Sewers 

 

Sanitary Sewers

 

– Sanitary sewers convey wastewater from homes and offices to wastewater treatment plants. They comprise pipes, sewer vents, and pumping stations and their job is to keep up with water quality since it is important to maintain public health in general. 

 

How they work 

 

At the point when you flush the toilet or wash dishes in the kitchen sink that water goes out of your home or offices through smaller pipelines to the main sewer lines of the road or to your septic pipe system. The pipelines that carry the waste of your home out are big enough to remove objects such as toilet paper, human waste or food waste. From this point, the wastewater reaches a wastewater treatment plant where it gets relatively cleaned in order to eliminate the pollutants before it gets back to the climate. 

 

Generally, sanitary sewers use gravity to divert the wastewater. In any case, in low-lying regions pumps are often utilized when the wastewater needs to arrive at an area that is at a certain height.

 

Storm Sewers 

 

Storm sewers carry rainwater and melting snow from rooftops and streets and channel it into streams, waterways, and different water bodies. 

 

How they work 

 

The rainwater enters storm sewers via manholes, pipes, drain inlets, open ditches, etc., and gets carried away until it eventually flows into different water bodies without being treated. This is the reason why not putting poisonous things such as paint, solvents, used motor oil, and cleaning liquids down the drain is a good idea. It can damage these water bodies and wildlife.  

 

Storm sewers can also get clogged with leaves, litter, and other debris and when this happens there can be flooding.

 

Combined Sewers  

 

Combined sewers are a combination of sanitary sewers and storm sewers. It carries both the wastewater and stormwater (rainwater) to wastewater plants. They are not in use as much now because when it rains a lot the system can not handle both the surface water and the wastewater and this causes the sewer to overflow. 

 

How they work 

 

In combined sewers, both the wastewater from buildings and the rain flow into the same pipe. During dry climate the combined wastewater and rainwater stream toward the wastewater treatment plant instead of the river. 

 

During the wet weather, the combined sewers dump raw sewage and industrial wastewater into various water bodies resulting in contamination of water environmental damage. 

 

Far more terrible, in the extreme weather conditions combined sewers can cause the wastewater to back-up into the buildings that can cause a sticky mess in your house or office.
