The use of plastics has grown dramatically in the last 50 years. In fact, it has become so popular that more than 380 billion pounds of plastic is produced every year. The most common type of plastic is PVC, also known as vinyl. PVC is a great material for plumbing and construction because of its resistance to extreme heat and cold, its durability, its flexibility and its ability to bend easily.
When no plasticizers are added what we get is uPVC. It’s just another material made from plastic known as the subpart of PVC. So let’s find out how PVC and uPVC are different from each other.
Difference between PVC and uPVC
Not much but these two materials have only one difference that makes them both different from each other.
The only difference between PVC and uPVC is that PVC is made with BPA and phthalates. These two are the kind of plasticizers that make the material more flexible. The u in uPVC stands for unplasticized as it doesn’t have any extra materials. Therefore, uPVC is stronger and is known as a rigid plastic.
uPVC is used more to build water pipes than PVC. Because of its superior resistance to chemical erosion and its smooth inner surface allows water to flow smoothly and without any interruption. uPVC is also resistant to a wider range of temperatures than PVC.
PVC in major cases is used to build sewer pipes and the transportation of nonpotable water. Although CPVC is the most suited material to build residential pipes.
PVC is used as a replacement for copper and aluminium pipes. It is easy to cut into smaller pieces and can be fastened with glue, making it a good alternative to metal. uPVC is also recyclable and can be reshaped into newer products or pipes at very high temperatures.
Durability
Because it is designed to be softer and more flexible than many other plastics PVC is not as durable as uPVC. Nonetheless, both the materials are resistant to sunlight, oxidation, and a variety of chemicals. PVC’s ability to withstand sunlight often makes it more useful than ABS pipes.
